Warm tap water thaws the pound

Some nights we get home and nothing is out for dinner. We forgot to pull anything that morning, or the day just ran long. We prioritize protein for ourselves and the kids, so there is usually a sealed pound of ground beef in the freezer for exactly those nights.

The fix is a bowl of warm tap water. Not hot. Set the sealed package in and leave it. About thirty minutes later it has softened through, and you can cook it the way you would have if you had remembered it that morning. You are not boiling anything. You are not standing there stirring ice.

Keep the plastic closed so the water stays outside the meat. That matters for ground beef, and it matters more for steak. If water gets into a steak package, the texture goes wrong.

Ground beef is what we reach for when the plan falls apart. Tacos, a quick skillet, something we already know how to make. We still try to thaw ahead when we can. When we cannot, warm water and half an hour usually get dinner back on the stove.
